7th - Primary Relationships

This week we continue to learn about the social desires of all people, focusing on Primary Relationships. Students must identify, explain, and appreciate their primary relationships.  Be looking for mail all you moms, dads, grandparents, and other role models!

6th - Puppets Away!

6th graders are learning about peer pressure this week and doing a project to raise their self esteem.  Ask your student what self esteem is and how to increase their own as well as a friends.  In class, they are creating puppets that will eventually be used to practice refusal skills?  What are refusal skills? Talk to your student and see if you can figure it out.  We'll be talking about it in class on Tuesday.

8th Power of One postponed

Well... communication is everything, correct 8th grade?  Our Power of One projects are on hold until we have computer space. Probably until the 2nd week of October.  There are great ideas a-foot however!  Which is most exciting.  Until then, 8th grade will be learning about communication and relationship (for all relationships, not just dating) skills.

3 Social Desires

According to Eric Jensen, author of Poverty & the Brain, students (and I would pose all people) are looking for 3 social desires to be fulfilled.  Ask your student what those three things are. Below is the answer for you:

1. Good Primary Relationship
2. Feeling of Belonging
3. To Feel Special and Important

We have been exploring these concepts in class, ask your student how.

6th - Self Esteem

Well, 6th grade is all done with their specific self esteem work, and we will now move into Peer Pressure.

We are ALWAYS looking for magazines for class projects, so if you have some laying around please send them in with your student!

THANKS!

Prime Time - Receipt of Student Handbooks DUE!

All Prime Time students should have turning in their Receipt of Student - Parent Handbook today.  If they have not turned it in, it needs to be signed and returned Monday!

Thanks!

8th - Power of One

Today we discussed Power of One - A Better You in more detail. There are some GREAT personal improvement challenges and goals that will unfold in the next week and a half.  We have students striving to be more organized, better money managers, skilled entrepreneurs, better babysitters, more engaged family members, and generous philanthropists.  It is great! Can't wait to see how it all ends up.

8th - Power of One

Today we began talking about the Power of One in the 8th grade classes.  Power of One is the idea that One person can do a lot of change in the world if he/she chooses.  The students are going to work on their individual personal development (that is their own growing and changing), by choosing an something in their own lives to improve upon.  A Better You is the name of the project and so far we already have some great ideas coming out of the wood work.  A few students are very confused! But it will come together and be grand at the end!

Don't Dare to Compare - Dove Evolution Video

This week the 6th grade is learning about the power of computers and make-up in advertising.  They are learning not to compare themselves to pictures in magazines or to people on TV.  Click link below to see one of the videos they saw in class:

Welcome to the New Year!

Well, O'Leary FACS is going on-line... sort of.  Mrs. Hubbard has been wanting to create and on-line environment for a while, but was not sure where to start, so here we are in the bloggosphere sharing news and knowledge with students and parents about what is happening in O'Leary FACS.
